Artists for Art (AFA) began when a small group of artists in Northeastern Pennsylvania, decided to meet to get to know each other better and share ideas about art. This led to a number of exhibits in public buildings, and then small gallery shows in one of the artist's homes. It was called the Tevy Gallery and still exists with small exhibits from time to time. The group also sponsored a series of days creating art on and about the Lackawanna River, which culminated in a series of exhibits throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. The final exhibit was in the State Capitol building in Harrisburg. These efforts attracted the attention of many other artists and persons interested in art, the meetings became more formalized into monthly meetings and AFA's membership grew considerably. Dr. Peter Cupple, a member, had purchased an older three story building on Lackawanna Avenue in downtown Scranton and renovated the facade. He offered the first floor to AFA at a very reasonable rent and AFA then renovated it as a Gallery. AFA has since grown into an important cultural force on the local scene with a large membership from the area interested in the arts.

AFA's Mission
Artists for ART (AFA) is an organization of regional visual artists whose mission is to promote the appreciation of visual arts in the community; to promote the work of local artists and others; and to provide support for local visual artists.

Funding
AFA's funding comes from a variety of sources: modest annual membership dues; proceeds from the annual auction, commissions from works sold in the Gallery, grants for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and others, contributions from local businesses and corporations and personal contributions from families and individuals. AFA has been able, by careful management, to provide a wide range of activities, and become an important cultural force in the community while remaining solvent. Ongoing contributions of various kinds are important because these are contributions not merely to an association of artists but to the cultural, artistic and even economic health of Northeast Pennsylvania.
